Cassie Schneider, first grade teacher at Upland Heights, said the book is about a duck that lives on a farm.
“In the story, Duck decides he wants to have an election on the farm because he doesn’t like doing his chores,” Schneider said. “He then runs for governor and president, but in the end, he comes back to the farm because all of those jobs were too much work.”
Schneider said that the purpose of reading this book with her students was to start teaching them about elections, voting, and election day.
“We just want to teach the concept of an election, running a campaign, and of course how voting works,” Schneider said. “We are teaching them that voting is a right and a responsibility.”
Schneider said that the students analyzed the characters, Duck and Farmer Brown, from the book. She said they discussed what makes them good characters and why they would vote for them.
“We discussed positives for both,” Schneider said. “Then each class voted and wrote about who they voted for and why they voted for them.”
Schneider said that the students enjoyed the book and the projects they did after reading the book.
“They can’t wait to vote,” Schneider said. “We talked a lot about how voting gives them a voice and how important it is to be a part of the process to help choose a leader. We talked about how having this right and responsibility is one of the reasons our country is so special.”
