Upland Heights Elementary Students Rewarded for Reading

Upland Heights Media Specialist, Vickie Benson, said the challenge began on December 1. She said the challenge asks students to read for 20 minutes a night for seven nights.

“This challenge is all about reading at home,” Benson said. “Teachers send home a train track reading log, students fill out a ‘track’ by listing title and author of any book read, for every 20 minutes read at home. They get to choose what books to read.  Parents can also read to them, which works best for the PreK and Kinder students.”

Benson explained that when the student brings back their completed at-home reading log, the class ticket gets a punch.

“Each class has an ‘Admission Ticket’ displayed in the main hallway,” Benson said. “Everyone wants their class ticket punched!”

On December 18, the day before the winter break begins, to reward students for their extra reading, each class will get a special treat.

“All classes will get to wear PJ's, drink hot cocoa, and watch The Polar Express,” Benson said. “All students and staff are invited to wear their most favorite pajamas for the day in honor of ‘cuddling up with a good book’ this holiday.”
