Upland Heights Fifth Grade Teachers Think Outside the Box...of Cookies

Upland Heights Fifth Grade Math Teacher Laura Cater, along with the rest of the fifth grade team, is obsessed with Crumbl Cookies, and they thought including them in their lessons about fraction division would be the icing on the...cookie.

"In fifth grade math, one of the more difficult concepts we teach is fraction division," Carter said. "We were able to use the cookies to represent whole numbers, then cut them into fractional pieces to model this concept. The cookies were a great visual for fraction division."

Carter said the fifth grade reading teachers also jumped in on the lesson by involving Crumbl Cookies into their lesson plans as well.

"Our reading teachers incorporated the Crumbl theme by creating an informational text about the history of Crumbl, then students wrote detailed descriptions based on images of some of the cookies," Carter said.

Activities like this are some of the best ways to get students engaged in lessons, and as Carter explained, a really good way to reinforce new concepts.

"Students really enjoyed the themed day and were highly engaged in the activities," Carter said. "Because of the relevance and authenticity of the activities, students were able to draw on their own connections to their own experiences."

Carter said she believes connecting to a student's experiences is what helps them apply lessons in class to the real world, thus helping them retain the information.

"When students make these connections, learning is more fun for everyone," Carter said. "We are so thankful for Crumbl Cookies in Lubbock for partnering with us and donating the cookies for us to use! Without their generosity, we would not have been able to provide this engaging experience for our students."
