Upland Heights Students Forecast the Weather

Students taking science lab for bonus time on Fridays had a blast learning about the weather. During this six weeks, tutor Diane Zartman is teaching her students all about the weather with this week focusing on weather prediction for kindergarten through 2nd grade and cloud formation to 3rd through 5th grades.

Kindergarten through 2nd grade are learned about graphing the weather, dressing for weather, predicting temp and weather for the following day. The 3rd through 5th graders learned about cloud formations and how they are made.

For the experiment, Zartman put hot water in the jar dropped a match in and had the students quickly cover it with a pan if ice to watch the cloud form. The smoke from the match represents the dust/smoke particles. The hot water represents the warm moist air coming from the south and the ice represents the cool dry air. The water molecules attach to the particles in the air to form clouds. All students also got to make their own weather map.
